The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 5:40 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Butts, Comeau, Meighen, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), and Stewart (6).

Member of the committee in attendance from Vancouver by videoconference: The Honourable Senator Perrault, P.C. (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

By videoconference, from the West Coast Trollers' Association:

Ms Kathy Scarfo, President.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 19, 1997, the committee resumed its examination upon the questions of privatization and quota licensing in Canada's fisheries. (See proceedings of the committee dated November 27, 1997, Issue No. 2, for complete text of Order of Reference .)

Dr. Chris Newton made a statement and answered questions.

Ms Kathy Scarfo made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
