The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 8:30 a.m. in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Butts, Cook, Comeau, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), and Stewart (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

By videoconference, from the University of Iceland:

Professor Ragnar Arnason, Department of Economics.

By videoconference, from the Directorate of Fisheries, Iceland:

Mr. Ari Edwald, Special Adviser to the Minister of Fisheries.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 19, 1997, the committee resumed its examination upon the questions of privatization and quota licensing in Canada's fisheries. (See proceedings of the committee dated November 27, 1997, Issue No. 2, for complete text of Order of Reference. )

Professor Arnason made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Edwald made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:45, the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
