The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 9:00 a.m. in Room 505 Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Butts, Comeau, Cook, Meighen, Perreault, Robertson, Robichaud (Saint-Louis-de-Kent ) and Stewart (9).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:

Ms Carol Beal, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services;

Mr. Robert Bergeron, Director General, Small Craft Harbours Directorate;

Mr. Maurice Girouard, Regional Director, Small Craft Harbours, Maritimes Region.

Pursuant to Order of Reference adopted on Thursday March 4, 1999, the Committee commenced its examination of the expenditures set out in Fisheries and Oceans Votes 1, 5 and 10 of the Estimates for the Fiscal year ending March 31, 2000. ( For full text of Order of Reference, please refer to Issue No. 23, Thursday June 3, 1999.)

Ms Beal made an opening statement and with Mr. Bergeron and Mr. Girouard, answered questions.

At 10:30 a.m. the committee continued in camera.

At 10:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
