The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 3:20 p.m. in Room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honorable John B. Stewart, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Carney, Corbin, De Bané, Di Nino, Doody, Grafstein, Losier-Cool and Stewart (9).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Oliver.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Gerry Goldstein, Economics Division.
Also in attendance: The officials reporters of the Senate.

Hans Peter Furrer, Director, Political Affairs;
Hans De Jong, Head, International Relations.
From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade:
Kathryn McCallion, Assistant Deputy Minister, International Business, Passport and Consular Affairs;
Claude Carrière, Director, Tariff and Market Access Division.
The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference on the consequences for Canada of the emerging European Monetary Union and other related trade and investment matters (See committee proceedings of November 27, 1997, Issue No. 5).
Mr. Furrer made a presentation and answered questions.
Mrs. McCallion made a presentation and, along with Mr. Carrière, answered questions.
At 5:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
