The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 4:03 p.m. in room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Carney, De Bané, Di Nino, Grafstein, Stewart and Stollery (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Peter Berg, Economics Division.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Statistics Canada:

Mr. David Dodds, Director, International Trade Division;

Mr. Yvan Gervais, Chief of Production and Analysis Section, International Trade Division;

Ms Marlene Sterparn, Senior Analyst, International Trade Division.

The committee resumed consideration of its order of reference concerning the consequences for Canada of the emerging European Monetary Union and other related trade and investment matters (see committee proceedings of November 27, 1997, Issue No. 5).

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Andreychuk to incorporate the graphs and illustrations presented by the witnesses from Statistics Canada in the committee's record.

Carried.

The witnesses each made a presentation and took questions from committee members.

At 5:05 p.m., the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a budgetary matter.
