The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 4:00 p.m. in Room 505 of the Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honorable John B. Stewart, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honorable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Corbin, De Bané P.C., Di Nino, Grafstein, Losier-Cool and Stewart (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Peter Berg, Economics Division.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade:

Ralph Lysyshyn, Director General, International Security Bureau;

Robert Brooks, Deputy Director, Ukraine-CIS, Eastern Europe Division.

The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference calling for it to consider the consequences for Canada of the emerging European Monetary Union and other related trade and investment matters. (See committee proceedings of November 27, 1997, Issue No. 5).

The witnesses each made a presentation and answered the questions of committee members.

Senator Andreychuk moved that the tables presented by Mr. John D. Murray of the Bank of Canada when he testified before the committee on Tuesday, May 12, be appended to the transcripts of the proceedings.

At 5:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
