The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 3:23 p.m. in Room 160-S of the Centre Building, the Chairman, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Doody, Grafstein, Losier-Cool, Stewart, Stollery and Whelan, P.C. (10).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Peter Berg, Economics Division.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
APPEARING:
The Honourable Raymond Chan, P.C., M.P., Secretary of State, Asia-Pacific, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
WITNESS:
From Carleton University:
Mr. Martin Rudner, Professor of International Affairs, Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.
The committee resumes consideration of its Order of Reference concerning relations between Canada and the Asia-Pacific region. (See Issue No. 2, October 29, 1997.)
The witnesses each made a presentation and answered the questions of committee members.
Members of the committee examined a budget proposal of $17,200 to complete the special study on relations between Canada and the Asia-Pacific region.
On motion of Senator Stollery, the budget proposal is adopted.
At 5:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
