The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.
Members of the committee presents: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Forrestall, Grafstein, Losier-Cool, Lynch-Staunton, Robertson, Stewart, Stollery and Whelan, P.C. (13).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Mahovlich (1).
In attendance: Peter Berg, David S. Goetz and Jack Stilborn from the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:

Mr. Alex Morrison, President, Lester B. Pearson Canadian International Peacekeeping Training Centre;
Mr. Paul LaRose-Edwards, Executive Director, CANADEM.
As panel # 2:
Professor Kim Richard Nossal, Department of Political Science, McMaster University;
Mr. Doug Fraser, Executive Director, Canadian Council for International Peace and Security.
The committee, resumed consideration of its order of reference pertaining to its examination of the ramifications to Canada:
1. of the changed mandate of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Canada's role in NATO since the demis of the Warsaw Pact, the end of the Cold War and the recent addition to membership in NATO of Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic; and
2. the peacekeeping, with particular reference to Canada's ability to participate in it under the auspices of any international body of which Canada is a member.
Messrs Morrison and LaRose-Edwards each made a statement and answered questions.
At 4:27 p.m., the committee suspended sitting.
At 4:39 p.m., the committee resumed sitting.
Professor Nossal made a statement and answered questions.
Mr. Fraser made a statement and answered questions.
At 7:06 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
