The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day in Room 257, East Block, at 3:44 p.m., the Honourable Lorna Milne, Chair, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Bryden, Buchanan, P.C., Fraser, Grafstein, Joyal, P.C., Milne, Moore and Pearson (10).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Adams (1).
In attendance: Mary Hurley and Nancy Holmes, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 10, 1998, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-57, An Act to amend the Nunavut Act with respect to the Nunavut Court of Justice and to amend other Acts in consequence. (For full text of Order of Reference, please see Issue No. 52, Thursday, February 4, 1999).

The Chair made an opening statement and introduced Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley, the Inuktitut/English interpreter.
Leena Evic-Twerdin, Allan Maclure and Rebecca Williams each made a statement and, together with Jim Posynick, answered questions.
It was agreed -- That, if possible, the Inuktitut text of the statements by Ms Evic-Twerdin and Ms Rebecca Williams be appended to the proceedings of this day.
At 6:09 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
