The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day in Room 257, East Block, at 10:52 a.m., the Honourable Lorna Milne, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Bryden, Buchanan, P.C., Grafstein, Joyal, P.C., Milne, Moore, Nolin and Pépin (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Pearson (1).

In attendance: Mary Hurley and Nancy Holmes, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 10, 1998, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-57, An Act to amend the Nunavut Act with respect to the Nunavut Court of Justice and to amend other Acts in consequence. (For full text of Order of Reference, please see Issue No.52, Thursday, February 4, 1999.)

WITNESS:

From the Department of Justice:

Howard Bebbington, Counsel, Criminal Law Police Section.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Howard Bebbington answered questions.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Bryden -- That the Committee dispense with clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-57.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Bryden -- That Bill C-57 be reported to the Senate without amendment.

After debate,

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed, the Honourable Senator Grafstein having abstained.

It was agreed -- That the Chair be authorized to approve the final text of the report.

At 11:07 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
