The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day, in Room 256-S, Centre Block, at 12:07 p.m., the Acting Deputy Chair, the Honourable Pierre Claude Nolin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Fraser, Grafstein, Moore, Nolin, Pearson and Pépin (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).

In attendance: Luc Gagné, Mollie Dunsmuir and Nancy Holmes, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 5, 1998, the committee continued its consideration of proposals to correct certain anomalies, inconsistencies and errors and to deal with other matters of a non-controversial and uncomplicated nature in the Statutes of Canada and to repeal certain Acts that have ceased to have effect. (For full text of Order of Reference please refer to Issue 65, Wednesday, April 14, 1999.)

Don Macpherson, Legislative Counsel, Legislative Section.

The Honourable Pierre Claude Nolin made an opening statement.

Hélène Rodrigue made a statement and, together with Don Macpherson, answered questions.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Moore -- That the further amendment tabled by the Department of Justice be agreed to and appended to the committee's report.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 12:13 p.m., pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 2, 1998, the committee continued its consideration of Bill S-17, An Act to amend the Criminal Code respecting criminal harassment and other related matters. (For full text of Order of Reference please refer to Issue 51, Wednesday, February 3, 1999.)
