The Standing Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules and Orders met at 4:30 p.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Shirley Maheu, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cools, DeWare, Grimard, Kelly, Lewis, Maheu, Milne, Pearson, Robertson, Rossiter, Stanbury and Stollery (12).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Corbin, Gigantès, Jessiman, Lucier and Nolin (6).
In attendance: Mr. Gary O'Brien, Clerk of the Committee, and other Senate officials.
The committee proceeded to the consideration of the Order of Reference dated December 16, 1997, concerning the attendance of Senator Thompson.
The Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Paul C. Bélisle, and Mr. Joseph Maingot, Q.C., Special Advisor to the Clerk of the Committee, made statements and answered questions.
After debate, -- It was agreed that the committee make a report to the Senate recommending that the Honourable Senator Andrew Thompson be ordered to attend before the Standing Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules and Orders at its next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 18, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 160-S.
At 7:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
