The Special Committee on Transportation Safety and Security met this day in camera at 3:35 p.m., in Room 172-E, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Forrestall, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Forrestall, Adams, Johnstone, Maloney and Roberge (5).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Johnson (1).

In attendance: Bruce Carson, Senior Advisor; John Christopher, Library of Parliament Researcher.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 18, 1998, the Committee continued its study on the state of transportation safety and security in Canada (see Issue # 1 for the complete text of the Order of Reference).

The committee considered its future business.

At 4:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Special Committee on Transportation Safety and Security met this day at 10:50 a.m., in Room 172-E, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Forrestall, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Forrestall, Johnstone, Maloney and Roberge (4).

In attendance: Bruce Carson, Senior Advisor; John Christopher, Library of Parliament Researcher.

WITNESSES:

From Transport Canada:

Mr.Ron Jackson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security Group;

Mr. Art Laflamme, Director General, Civil Aviation;

Mr. Bob Shuter, Senior Policy Advisor, International Aviation.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 18, 1998, the committee continued its study on the state of transportation safety and security in Canada (see Issue # 1 for the complete text of the Order of Reference).

Mr. Jackson made a presentation and, with Mr. Laflamme. answered questions.

At a later date, officials will supply written responses to questions raised by committee members.

At 12:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
