The Subcommittee on Transportation Safety met this day at 5:12 p.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Forrestall, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bacon, Forrestall and Roberge. (3)
In attendance: Bruce Carson, Senior Advisor; Keith Miller, Special Adviser on Aviation.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:
From Canadian Airlines International:
Capt. Bob Weatherly, Vice-President, Flight Operations and Chief Pilot;
Capt. Peter Howe, Director, Safety;
Steve Markey, Vice-President, Government and Corporate Affairs; and
Darryl Watkins, Manager, Flight Safety.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997, the subcommittee proceeded to study the state of transportation safety and security in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997, for full text of Order of Reference.)
It was agreed to distribute the brief from Canadian Airlines International in English, with the French translation to follow tomorrow.
Mr. Markey made a statement.
Capt. Weatherly made a statement.
Capt. Howe made a statement.
Mr. Watkins made a statement.
The witnesses answered questions.
At 7:05 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997, the subcommittee proceeded in camera for the purpose of considering a draft report and other related matters. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997, for full text of Order of Reference.)
The subcommittee considered its draft report.
It was agreed to name the interim report "Think Safety."
At 12:00 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
