The Subcommittee on Transportation Safety met this day at 11:01 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable J. Michael Forrestall, presiding.

Members of the Subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Forrestall, Mercier and Roberge (5).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Eymard G. Corbin (1).

In attendance: Bruce Carson, Senior Advisor; John Christopher, Library of Parliament Researcher.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Air Canada:

Geoffrey Elliot, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Government Relations;

Captain Wayne MacLelland, Vice-President, Flight Operations;

W. D. (David) Ramage, Director, Maintenance Quality and Engineering.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997, the subcommittee proceeded to study the state of transportation safety and security in Canada and other related matters. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997, for full text of Order of Reference.)

Questioning of witnesses:

It was agreed, -- That, at the end of the questioning of witnesses by the Honourable Senators, the research staff of the subcommittee be authorized to pose questions.

Mr. Elliot made a statement and, with his colleagues, answered questions.

At 12:00 p.m., the Honourable Senator Adams, Deputy Chairman of the subcommittee, assumed the Chair.

At 12:12 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
