The Subcommittee on Transportation Safety met this day in camera at 11:10 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable J. Michael Forrestall, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Forrestall and Mercier (4).

In attendance: Bruce Carson, Senior Advisor; John Christopher, Library of Parliament Researcher.

WITNESS:

From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade

Daniel White, Trade Commissioner.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997, the subcommittee proceeded in camera to study the state of transportation safety and security in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997, for full text of Order of Reference.)

Mr. White provided the subcommittee with a briefing on the transport sector in Europe for purposes of the Subcommittee's fact-finding mission to Europe, February 16-28, 1998.

The subcommittee staff outlined the itinerary for the subcommittee's fact-finding mission to Europe, February 16-28, 1998.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Bacon,

THAT the Subcommittee agree to permit Mr. Frank Barber, Assistant to the Chair to travel with the Subcommittee on its fact-finding mission to Europe, February 16-28, 1998 provided that the costs of his travel are not charged to the budgets of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications, and

THAT the funding of his travel be approved by the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was resolved in the affirmative.

At 12:20 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Professor Navin made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:50 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
