The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology has the honour to present its

FIRST REPORT

Your committee, which was authorized by the Senate to incur expenses for the purpose of its examination and consideration of such legislation and other matters as were referred to it, reports, pursuant to rule 104, that the expenses incurred by the committee during the Second Session of the Thirty-fifth Parliament are as follows:

1. With respect to its examination and consideration of legislation:

Transportation (including witness expenses) 30,623.72

TOTAL $38,318.82

2. With respect to a special study of the Subcommittee on Post-Secondary Education to examine and report upon the serious state of post-secondary education in Canada:

Professional Services $ 24,773.83
Transportation (including witness expenses) 73,888.58

TOTAL $98,662.41

3. With respect to a special study by the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs to examine and report on measures to expedite the adjudication of pensions:

Transportation (including witness expenses) $ 11,229.00
Miscellaneous 65.00

TOTAL $ 11,294.00

Your committee heard from 139 witnesses, held 35 meetings and issued 18 reports in the last session, during which it reviewed nine Bills (C-3, C-11, C-12, C-18, C-35, C-41, C-202, S-5 and S-11).

Your committee also created a Subcommittee on Post-Secondary Education to examine and report upon the serious state of post-secondary education in Canada, hearing from a total of 171 witnesses over 25 meetings.

Your committee also created a Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs to examine and report on the adjudication of veterans' pensions, hearing from a total of 28 witnesses over 5 meetings.

Among the reports issued by the main committee on these matters were the Interim Report of the Subcommittee on Post-Secondary Education and Steadying the Course, the latest of a series of reports from the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, which began in 1981.

The Interim Report of the Subcommittee on Post-Secondary Education briefly reviewed the work of the Subcommittee to date and expressed the Subcommittee's intention to continue its study in the new Parliament.

The Report of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, Steadying the Course, presented its findings, together with 21 recommendations, including recommendations to amend the Pension Act, and other legislation affecting veterans.
