The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, at 8:00 a.m. in camera, the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ferretti Barth, Johnstone, LeBreton, Maheu and Murray (5).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 5, 1997, the committee resumed consideration of the implementation and application of Chapter 1, An Act to amend the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act, the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act and the Canada Shipping Act, and the associated Federal Child Support Guidelines (for complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 3, dated December 16, 1997).

The committee agreed that the Honourable Senator Peter Stollery be named to the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

At 9:45 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day in Room 705, Victoria Building at 10:00 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ferretti Barth, Johnstone, LeBreton, Maheu and Murray (5).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Bosa, Chalifoux and Di Nino (3).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Terrence Thomas, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 19, 1998, the committee resumed consideration of Bill S-10, An Act to amend the Excise Tax Act (for complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 10, dated May 6, 1998).

WITNESSES:

Peter Gzowski, Media Personality; Founder, Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournaments for Literacy.

Roch Carrier, Author; Former Director of the Canada Council.

From the Canadian Booksellers' Association:

Sheryl McKean, Executive Director;

Gailmarie Anderson, Incoming President.

From Indigo Books and Music:

Dan Mosersky, Vice-President.

The Chairman made a statement of introduction.

Peter Gzowski made a statement and answered questions. Mr. Gzowski deposited his statement with the Clerk of the Committee: Exhibit 5900 S2/S-10, 12 "1", entitled "Statement before the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology in Support of Bill S-10, an act to amend the excise tax act".

Roch Carrier made a statement and answered questions.

Sheryl McKean made a statement.

Gailmarie Anderson made a statement.

Dan Mosersky made a statement.

Ms. McKean, Ms. Anderson and Mr. Mosersky answered questions as a panel.

The Chairman thanked the witnesses.

Jocelyn Charron made a statement and deposited his submission with the Clerk of the Committee: Exhibit 5900 S2/S-10, 12 "2", entitled "Presentation to the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, concerning Bill S-10 An Act to amend the Excise Tax Act, May 1998".

Larry Wong made a statement.

Sheryl McKean made a statement.

Mr. Charron, Mr. Wong and Ms. McKean answered questions as a panel.

Hervé Foulon made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed that Ms. Clubb would supply the committee with statistics on foreign language materials.

It was agreed that the Honourable Senator Maheu be named to the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.
