The Standing Senate Committee on Social affairs, Science and Technology met this day in Room 705, Victoria Building, at 10:00 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cools, Ferretti Barth, Lavoie-Roux, LeBreton, Maloney, Murray, P.C. and Poy (7).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Johnstone, Wilson and Kinsella (3).
In attendance: From Canadian Policy Research Networks Inc.: Denis St-Martin.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 18, 1998, the committee resumed consideration of the special study on the dimensions of social cohesion in Canada in the context of globalization and other economic and structural forces that influence trust and reciprocity among Canadians. The Chairman made a statement.
Ms Maxwell made a statement and tabled a document with the Clerk of the Committee entitled: "The Economic Dimensions of Social Cohesion in Canada", October 20, 1998, as Exhibit No. 5900 S2/SS-5, 18, "1".
Professor Noël made a statement.
Ms Maxwell and Professor Noël answered questions.
It was agreed that Ms Maxwell would provide the committee with information sources about the concepts of `corporate anorexia' and `long-run dynamic growth'.
The Chairman thanked the witnesses.
