The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day in Room 705, Victoria Building, at 3:45 p.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Butts, Callbeck, Cohen, Cools, Gill, Johnstone, Lavoie-Roux, LeBreton, Murray, P.C. and Poy (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).

In attendance: From Carleton University: Denis Saint-Martin.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The Chair made opening remarks.

The Chair acknowledged the work of the committee's previous Clerk, Ms Nadine Huggins.

Tribute was paid to the Honourable Peter Bosa, Deputy Chairman, whose death occurred December 10, 1998.

Senator Cools moved that Senators Butts be elected as Deputy Chairman of the committee.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to by unanimous consent.

It was agreed that a letter of thanks be sent on behalf of the committee to the previous clerk of the committee, Ms Nadine Huggins.

At 3:55 p.m., it was agreed, that the committee proceed in camera to consider future business.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 18, 1998, the committee resumed consideration of the special study on the dimensions of social cohesion in Canada in the context of globalization and other economic and structural forces that influence trust and reciprocity among Canadians. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 17, dated September 29, 1998.)

The committee discussed future business.

It was agreed that the committee would hold six meetings as part of its study on social cohesion dealing with the following themes:

1. Citizenship State Relationship -- February 9, 1999

2. Voluntary Sector/Faith Organizations -- February 10, 1999

3. Banks/Credit -- February 16, 1999

4. Post-Secondary Education -- February 17, 1999

5. Employment/Work place -- March 2, 1999

6. Unions -- March 3, 1999

At 4:42 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chairman.
