The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 4:05 p.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Bacon, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Buchanan, De Bané, Forrestall, Johnson, Mercier, Poulin, Roberge and Spivak (10).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Angus.
In attendance: Martin Brennan, Special Advisor to the Committee
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate

From the Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters:
Maurice F.L. Jaques, Vice-President;
N. Douglas McRae, Director, Marine Insurance.
From the Shipping Federation of Canada:
Captain Ivan Lantz, Manager, Marine Operations;
Sonia Simard, Executive Assistant to the President.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 22, 1997, the Committee continued to consider Bill S-4, an Act to amend the Canada Shipping Act (marine liability).
The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.
It was agreed, -- That the letter by the Canadian Maritime Law Association be tabled with the Clerk of the Committee as Exhibit 5900 T1 - 1.36 / S-4 - 8 "1".
It was agreed, -- That the letter by the Canadian Shipowners Association be tabled with the Clerk of the Committee as Exhibit 5900 - T1 - 1.36 / S-4 - 8 "2".
It was agreed, -- That the letter by the Canadian International Freight Fowarders Association Inc. be tabled with the Clerk of the Committee as Exhibit 5900 - T1 - 1.36 / S-4 - 8 "3".
At 5:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
