The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 5:45 p.m. in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Orville H. Phillips, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Johnstone, and Phillips (3).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.Mr. Peter Goldring, M.P.

WITNESSES:

From the National Council of Veteran Associations in Canada:

Mr. H. Clifford Chadderton, Chairman; and

Mr. Brian Forbes, Honorary Secretary General.

From the Royal Canadian Legion:

Mr. Jim Rycroft, Director, Service Bureau; and

Mr. Jim Margerum, Chairman, Ontario Command Veterans Services Committee.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 5, 1997 and by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology on November 25, 1997, the Subcommittee resumed its examination of the state of health care in Canada concerning veterans of war and Canadian Service persons; that the study concern itself with the availability, quality and standards of health care available to those veterans and Service persons. (See Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated March 26, 1998, Issue No. 9, for complete text of Order of Reference.)

Messrs Chadderton and Forbes made statements and answered questions.

Messrs Rycroft and Margerum made statements and answered questions.

The subcommittee adjourned at 7:25 p.m. to the call of the Chair.
