The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met in camera at 9:05 a.m. this day, in room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Christensen, Cochrane, Finnerty, Kelleher, P.C., Sibbeston and Spivak (6).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers, Research Officer.
The Chair reported the decisions made by the Steering Committee. She noted that the Steering Committee did not come to an agreement on the MOX fuel issue and informed the Committee of the position of the members of the Steering Committee.
It was agreed to study the issue on MOX fuel as part of Phase I of the study on Nuclear Reactors Safety.
It was agreed that the workplan be adopted with the revisions that the research staff will incorporate in accordance with the decisions.
It was agreed to hold briefing meeting with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Canadian Environment Industry Association and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation for the purpose of providing background information to the Committee.
At 9:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 5:15 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Christensen, Cochrane, Finnerty, Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Sibbeston, Spivak and Taylor (8).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers, Research Officer.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated December 1, 1999, proceeded to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment, and natural resources generally in Canada (Nuclear Reactor Safety).

Victor Snell, Director, Nuclear Safety and Licensing.
The witnesses made presentations and answered questions.
