The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources was videotaped and met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Buchanan, P.C., Christensen, Cochrane, Eyton, Finnerty, Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Spivak and Taylor (10).

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated December 1, 1999, proceeded to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment, and natural resources generally in Canada (Nuclear Reactors Safety). (See Issue No. 2, December 7, 2000, for the full text of the order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From Ontario Power Generation:

Carl Andognini, Special Nuclear Advisor to the President;

Richard Dicerni, Executive Vice-President and Corporate Secretary.

It was agreed to table the chart on Ontario historical performance as an exhibit to the Committee.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

It is moved by the Honourable Senator Taylor --

That the committee is supportive of getting Bill S-20, An Act to enable and assist the Canadian tobacco industry in attaining its objective of preventing the use of Tobacco products by young persons in Canada, referred to this committee; and

That the committee set aside 12 to 16 hours in the months of May and June for the purpose of such study, should it be referred to this committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was resolved in the affirmative.

It is moved by the Honourable Senator Taylor --,

That the Honourable Senators Kenny and Spivak be authorized to travel to Washington, should it be necessary, to meet with their counterparts and relevant authorities to address the issue of interbasin water transfer.

The question being put on the motion, it was resolved in the affirmative.

At 10:25 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
