The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Christensen, Cochrane, Finnerty, Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Sibbeston, Spivak and Taylor (10).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, Nolin, Kelly, Gustafson and Wilson.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers, researcher.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate
The committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated May 9, 2000, proceeded to study Bill S-20, Tobacco Act. (See Issue No. 11, June 6, 2000, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

From the Non-Smokers' Rights Association (NSRA):

The witnesses from the Non-Smokers' Rights Association, the Physicians for a Smoke Free Canada, Imperial Tobacco, JTI-Macdonald Corp. and Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, Inc. made a presentation and answered questions.
It was agreed -- That the documents entitled: "Request for information", "Bibliography of basic canadian cigarette research", "Canadian facts Toronto-Ontario" and "Imperial Tobacco Limited", be filed as an exhibit of the committee (5900-2.36/E1/S-20, 14 "1").
At 12:08 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 12:40 p.m, the committee resumed.
The witnesses from the Canadian Cancer Society and the Non-Smokers' Rights Association made a presentation and answered questions.
It was agreed -- That the document entitled: "Summary of Dates of Minimum Ages Pursuant to Sales to Minors Legislation and Tobacco Industry Voluntary Codes" be filed as an exhibit of the committee.
At 1:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
