The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 5:45 p.m., in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Cook, Mahovlich, Perrault, P.C., Squires, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent) and Watt (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESS:

From the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture:

Mr. Jerry Ward, Assistant Deputy Minister.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 7, 1999, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry.

Mr. Ward made an opening statement and answered questions.

It was moved by Senator Perrault:

That the material supplied by Jennifer and Doug Caines (Pools Cove) -- "A Brief History of our Experience of Scallop Culture" be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 11 "74") with the Clerk of the Committee;

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved by Senator Perrault -- That the material provided by Jerry Ward be filed as an exhibit (5900 F1-SS-1, 11 "97") with the Clerk of the Committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved by Senator Cook -- That the following budget application for legislation for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001 be concurred in and that the Chair submit same to the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
