The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 3:30 p.m. to examine the ramifications to Canada of the changed mandate of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Canada's role in NATO since the demise of the Warsaw Pact, the end of the Cold War and the recent addition to membership in NATO of Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic; and of peacekeeping, with particular reference to Canada's ability to participate in it under the auspices of any international body of which Canada is a member.

The Deputy Chairman: Senators, now that Senator Stewart has retired, the first item of business today is to elect a chairman. Are there any nominations?
Senator Corbin: I should like to nominate Senator Stollery as Chairman.
The Deputy Chairman: Are there any other nominations? If not, is it agreed that Senator Stollery be the Chairman of the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Deputy Chairman: Congratulations, Senator Stollery. The Chair is yours.

The Chairman: Thank very much, senators. Our next item of business is to elect another member to the steering committee. Are there any nominations?
Senator Grafstein: I move that Senator Corbin serve as a member of the steering committee.
The Chairman:Is it agreed?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
Senator Corbin: I accept.
The Chairman: Thank you. If it is acceptable to honourable senators, we will now continue in camera.
