The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology has the honour to table its

FIRST REPORT

Your committee, which was authorized by the Senate to incur expenses for the purpose of its examination and consideration of such legislation and other matters as were referred to it, reports, pursuant to Rule 104, that the expenses incurred by the committee during the First Session of the Thirty-Sixth Parliament are as follow:

With respect to its examination and consideration of legislation:

Your committee heard from 216 witnesses, held 73 meetings and issued 23 reports in the last session, during which it reviewed ten Bills (C-19, C-61, C-64, C-66, C-208, S-8,S-10, S-13, S-20 and S-30).

Your committee presented an Interim Report on the Federal Child Support Guidelines in June 1998 including 12 recommendations. As well, your committee presented its Final Report on Social Cohesion in June 1999.

Your committee also created a Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs to examine and report on state of health care in Canada concerning veterans of war and Canadian service persons, and to examine and report on the future of the Canadian War Museum, hearing from a total of 93 witnesses over 22 meetings.

The interim report of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs entitled "The State of Health Care for War Veterans and Service Men & Women -- First Report: Long-term care, standards of care and federal-provincial relations" presented its findings, together with 16 recommendations.

The final report of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs entitled "Raising the Bar: Creating a New Standard in Veterans Health Care" presented its findings, together with 68 recommendations.

The interim report of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs entitled "Guarding History" presented its findings together with 12 recommendations.
