The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this, at 8:36 a.m. in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Johnson, Oliver, Spivak, Stratton, Tkachuk, Tunney and Wiebe (10).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 2.)

Murray Downing, Andrew Denis and Daryl Knight made an opening statement and answered questions.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Tkachuk - That the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry condemn the federal government for its lack of action in the western farm crisis.
Carried.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Tkachuk - That this committee report to the Senate this afternoon that the Minister of Agriculture cancelled his appearance today before our committee, and therefore the committee recommends that a committee of the whole be struck at the earliest opportunity to hear from the Minister of Agriculture and all other recognized farm groups, including the ones who appeared before us today, on the crisis facing farmers in Manitoba and Western Canada.
