The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this, at 8:30 a.m. in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Chalifoux, Day, Gustafson, Hubley, Oliver, Phalen, Stratton, Tunney and Wiebe (10).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Frédéric Forge.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 2.).

Stewart Wells, Board Member.

From the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan:

Ivan Ottenbreit, Vice-President;

Arlynn Kurtz, Executive Director.

From Greenpeace Canada:

Holly Penfound, Campaign Coordinator - Environmental Health.

From the Keystone Agricultural Producers:

Don Dewar, President.

From the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate:

Marc Loiselle, Director.

From the Council of Canadians:

Nadège Adam, Biotechnology Campaigner.

From The Canadian Health Coalition:

Bradford Duplisea, Health Researcher.

Each presenter made an opening statement and answered questions.

Stewart Wells read a statement from the Canadian Wheat Board and Arlynn Kurtz read a statement from Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM).

The committee recessed at 10:24 a.m.

The committee resumed at 10:35 a.m.

Stewart Wells, Don Dewar, Ivan Ottenbreit, Holly Penfound, Arlynn Kurtz and Marc Loiselle each made an additional statement and answered questions.

The Honourable Senator Wiebe tabled a letter to "The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien dated July 31, 2001" with the Clerk of the committee and filed as (Exhibit No. 5900 A1/SS-19"1").

At 11:45 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
