Proceedings of the Standing Senate Committee on
Agriculture and Forestry

Issue 33 - Evidence

OTTAWA, Thursday, March 7, 2002

The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:30 a.m. to consider a draft budget for the committee.

Senator Leonard J. Gustafson (Chairman) in the Chair.

[English]

The Chairman: The first order of business is the financial report that you have before you, which we will submit to our people for next year's budget.

I do not know if you have had a chance to take a look at this draft. My own view is that it is a little rich. I thought we might have to ask for more money to get what we wanted. Mr.Charbonneau can fill you in on what was proposed if you have any questions. We will probably run into a number of issues, especially on the Prairies with the possibility of drought. We hope it does not happen, but it does not look that good at this point. Global warming is another area of concern. The committee has decided that we will take a look at that issue, which is a broad subject to cover. I am open to comments or suggestions.

Senator Chalifoux: I agree with what is proposed, if you can convince the Internal Economy Committee. However, we may have to go back and revise this budget.

Senator Oliver: I move the adoption of the budget.

The Chairman: Are we all in favour, or are there other suggestions? If there is no further discussion, we will adopt the report.

The committee adjourned.
