The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in camera, at 5:35 p.m. this day in room 256-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Callbeck, Chalifoux, Day, Gustafson, Tunney and Wiebe(7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Lorie Srivastava.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No.2.)

The committee reviewed a draft outline of a report.

A discussion followed on the future business of the committee.

The Honourable Senator Chalifoux moved -- That the committee initiate a study into the effects of climate change and global warming as to their effects on Canada's food security; and review the opportunities and challenges facing the agriculture industry by changes in climate.

The question being put on the motion, it was — agreed.

At 6:48 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Gustafson, Lapierre, Mahovlich, Oliver, Stratton, Tkachuk and Tunney (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Lorie Srivastava.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada. The Honourable Senator Oliver moved, -- That the committee approve the budget in the following amounts to study international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada.

Professional and Other Services  $ 79,000.00
Transport and Communications  $ 310,900.00
Other Expenditures  $ 5,800.00
Total  $ 395,700.00

The question being put on the motion, it was — agreed.

At 8:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
