The Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and commerce met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Kolber, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Furey, Kelleher, P.C., Kolber, Kroft, Oliver, Setlakwe, Taylor, Tkachuk and Wiebe (10).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Economic Division: Mr. Alexandre Laurin, Research Officer and Mr. Marion Wrobel, Senior Analyst.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, the Committee continued its examination of Bill C-8, to establish the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and to amend certain Acts in relation to financial institutions.

Mr. Pedersen made a statement and with the other witnesses of the Canadian Bankers Association answered questions.

Mr. Knight and Mr. Nygren of the Credit Union Central of Canada made a statement and with Mr. Topp answered questions.

Ms Bannerman and Ms Iacurto of the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada made a statement and with Mr. Ball answered questions.

Mr. Woolford of the Retail Council of Canada made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Hammond of the Canadian Payments Association made a statement and with Mr. Kreviazuk answered questions.

Mr. Bedbrook of ING Bank of Canada made a statement and with the assistance of Mr. Bell answered questions.

Ms Neil of the National Council of Women of Canada made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
