The Standing Senate Committee on Defence and Security met this day, at 6:10 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Deputy-Chair, the Honourable J. Michael Forrestall, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Day, Forrestall, LaPierre, Meighen and Wiebe (6).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer, General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Major-General J.O. Michel Maisonneuve, Assistant Deputy Chief of Defence Staff;

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the committee proceeded to its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference)
Major-General Michel Maisonneuve made a statement and with Brigadier-General P. M. Samson answered questions.
Deputy Commissioner Gary Loeppky made a statement and with Assistant Commissioner Richard Proulx answered questions.
At 8:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
