The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, at 6:00 p.m. in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Banks, Cordy, Day, Forrestall, Kenny, LaPierre, Wiebe (8).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer; General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault, Military Adviser.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Mr. Kenneth J. Calder, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the committee continued its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)
Mr. Calder made a statement and answered questions.
It was agreed - That the report entitled "Caught in the Middle" provided by the Conference of Defence Associations be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 7 "1").
It was agreed - That the report entitled "A Wake Up Call for Canada" provided by the Royal Canadian Military Institute be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 7 "2").
It was agreed - That the report entitled "To Secure a Nation" provided by the Council for Canadian Defence and Security in the 21st Century at the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies - University of Calgary be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 7 "3").
It was agreed - That the report entitled "The Special Senate Committee on the Subject Matter of Bill C-36 edited Evidence" provided by the Library of Parliament be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 7 "4").
At 7:45 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 7:50 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting in camera.
At 9:00p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
