The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, at 12:35 p.m. in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Banks, Cordy, Day, Kenny, LaPierre and Wiebe (7).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Stollery (1).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer, General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault, Military Adviser.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the committee continued its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)
Ms Sheila Fraser made a statement and, with Mr. Kasurak and Mr. Minto, answered questions.
Lieutenant General Couture made a statement and, with Brigadier-General Hearn and Colonel Cameron, answered questions.
It was agreed - That the material provided by the Maritime Forces Pacific be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "5").
It was agreed - That the material provided by the Port of Vancouver be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "6").
It was agreed - That the material provided by the City of Vancouver Police Department be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "7").
It was agreed - That the material provided by Transport Canada be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "8").
It was agreed - That the material provided by Vancouver International Airport be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "9").
It was agreed - That the material provided by the RCMP be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "10").
It was agreed - That the material provided by Canada Immigration be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "11").
It was agreed - That the material provided by Canada Customs be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "12").
It was agreed - That the material provided by One Canadian Air Division be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "13").
It was agreed - That the material provided by 17 Wing Winnipeg be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "14").
It was agreed - That the material provided by Air Canada be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 N2-SS-1, 9 "15").
At 2:24 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 2:29 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting.
At 3:55 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 4:00 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting in camera in room 256-S.
At 4:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
