The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:53 p.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Lowell Murray. P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Bolduc, Cools, Ferretti Barth, Finnerty, Murray, P.C., Stratton (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Setlakwe.

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Canada Customs and Revenue Agency:

Denis Lefebvre, Deputy Commissioner, Customs Branch;

David Miller, Assistant Commissioner, Assessment and Collections Branch;

Earle Warren, Director General, Major Projects Design and Development Directorate, Customs Branch;

Mike Jordan, Director General, Trade Policy and Interpretation Directorate, Customs Branch.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on May 3, 2001, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-23, An Act to amend the Customs Act and to make related amendments to other Acts.

Mr. Lefebvre made an opening statement and with Mr. Warren, Mr. Miller and Mr. Jordan, answered questions from members of the committee.

At 7:27 p.m. the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair
