The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met in camera at 9:33 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Bolduc, Finnerty, Ferretti Barth, Murray, P.C., Stratton, Tunney (7).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Furey, and Rompkey, P.C. (2).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

The committee met to discuss its future business.

The committee undertook a discussion of the draft agenda with respect to its study on the equilization policy.

It was agreed to allow from the Department of Finance: Barbara Anderson, Pierre Doucet, Sean Keenan, Richard Davis, Arndt Vermaeten to attend in order to discuss certain aspects of the committee's work plan.

At 11:02 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair

The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met in camera at 5:45 p.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Bolduc, Cools, Finnerty, Ferretti Barth, Murray, P.C., Stratton, Tunney (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Moore (1).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee undertook discussion of its future business and agreed to hear the Canadian Union of Public Employees during its hearings on equalization.

The committee undertook discussion of its draft report on the role of the government in the financing of deferred maintenance costs in Canada's post-secondary institutions.

At 6:47 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair

APPEARING:

Peter Mesheau, Minister of Finance of New Brunswick.

WITNESS:

From the Government of New Brunswick:

John Mallory, Deputy Minister of Finance.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 12, 2001, the committee undertook its examination of the effectiveness of and possible improvements to the present equalization policy in ensuring that provincial governments have sufficient revenues to provide reasonably comparable levels of public service at reasonably comparable levels of taxation.

Mr. Mesheau made an opening statement and with Mr. Mallory answered questions from members of the committee.

At 7:00 p.m., the committee continued its meeting in camera.

The committee undertook discussion of a revised draft report on deferred maintenance costs in Canada's post-secondary institutions.

At 8:07 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair
