The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:10 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Carney, P.C., Comeau, Cook, Hubley, Mahovlich, Meighen, Robertson, Watt (9).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESS:

From the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance:

David Rideout, Executive Director.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry. (See Issue No. 1, March 20, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference).

Mr. Rideout made an opening statement and answered questions.

It was agreed - That the material submitted by The Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium entitled "The Health of the Lake Winnipeg Ecosystem and the Role of the Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 4"11").

It was agreed - That the material submitted by Professor Richard Moccia, Co-ordinator, Aquaculture Program, University of Guelph entitled "Aquaculture Program Information" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 4"12").

It was agreed - That the material submitted by the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 4"13").

At 8:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Liseanne Forand, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy;

Paul Cuillerier, Director General, Habitat Management and Environmental Science;

Iola Price, Director, Aquaculture Science Branch, Oceans and Aquaculture Science Directorate.

It was agreed - That the material submitted by Office of the Auditor General of Canada entitled "Chapter 30 - Fisheries and oceans - The Effects of Salmon Farming in British Columbia on the Management of Wild Salmon Stocks - December 2000" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 4"14").

It was agreed - That the material submitted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 4"15").

At 7:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
