The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:00 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Comeau, Cook, Hubley, Johnson, Watt (6).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Forrestall (1).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Olayuk Akesuk, Minister of Sustainable Development, Government of Nunavut.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Sustainable Development, Government of Nunavut:

Peter Ittinuar, Assistant Deputy Minister;

Jane Cooper, Executive Assistant to the Minister; and

Carey Bonnell, Director, Fisheries and Sealing.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, the committee continued itsexamination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry. (See Issue No. 1, March 20, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.).

Minister Akesuk made an opening statement and withMr. Ittinuar, Mr. Bonnell and Ms Cooper answered questions.

It was agreed - That the material submitted by the Minister of Sustainable Development, Government of Nunavut be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit5900 F1-SS-1, 5"16").

At 8:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

It was agreed - That the material submitted by Dr. John Volpe, University of Victoria, be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 5"18").
