Legal and Constitutional Affairs

Issue 36, Evidence, June 6, 2002

OTTAWA, Thursday, June 6, 2002

The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, to which was referred Bill C-43, to amend certain acts and instruments and to repeal the Fisheries Prices Support Act, met this day at 10:48 a.m. to give consideration to the bill.

Honourable senators, we can go through this bill clause-by-clause — the amendments to the different acts — or do it en masse, clauses 1 to 37 inclusive.

Hon. Senators: En masse.

The Chairman: Shall clauses 1 to 37 carry?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Shall the schedule carry?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Shall the title carry?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Is it agreed that this bill be adopted without amendment?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Is it agreed that I report this bill at the next sitting of the Senate?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Before we adjourn, I would like to ask committee members their opinions on covering our deliberations on Bill C- 15B by television. This is a decision the chair of a committee can make. It has not been discussed at steering committee, but I would like to have agreement.

Senator Joyal: I know that the bill was recently introduced in the Senate, but do we have any idea of the number of witnesses we will hear?

The Chairman: We are hoping to conduct most of the deliberations on the bill next week if the bill comes to our committee in time. Perhaps we will have an extra meeting next Tuesday evening. Hopefully we will get through committee deliberations on the bill in the next week and a half.

Senator Joyal: That does not mean that we will have many witnesses.

The Chairman: We will have groups of witnesses. We have tried to group the witnesses so that our schedule will not be too onerous.

Is it agreed that the committee meetings in question will be televised?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The committee adjourned.
