The Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament met at 12:05 p.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Austin, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Bryden, DeWare, Di Nino, Gauthier, Joyal, P.C., Kinsella, Kroft, Losier-Cool, Lynch-Staunton, Murray, P.C., Poulin, Robichaud, P.C., Rossiter and Stratton (16).
Other senators attending: The Honourable Senators Nolin, Pitfield, P.C., Prud'homme, P.C. (3).
In attendance: From the library of Parliament: Mr. James Robertson, Researcher.
The Chairman reviewed the proposed agenda for today's meeting.
After debate,
It was agreed that for future meetings agenda items be reviewed by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure (Steering Committee).
The committee proceeded to the consideration of its Order of Reference of March 15, 2001 concerning the structure of committees.
The Honourable Senator Robichaud, P.C., and the Honourable Senator Kinsella made statements.
After debate,
It was agreed that the documents circulated at the meeting concerning the present structure of committees and the revised sitting schedule of Senate committees be printed as appendices to days proceedings.
The committee proceeded to the consideration of its Order of Reference dated February 20, 2001 concerning a proposal for a Senate committee on official languages.
After debate,
It was agreed that further consideration of the item be postponed until the next sitting of the committee.
At 1:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
