The committee proceeded to the consideration of time allocated to tributes in the Upper Chamber, as referred to the committee on December 4, 2001.
After debate,
It was agreed that the staff draft a report for consideration recommending that a 15-minute period be set aside on days agreed to by the Leader of the Government and the Leader of the Opposition to give tributes to senators or former senators, that the time be allocated by agreement between the Leaders and taking into account the possible intent of independent senators, and that each senator be allowed to speak no more than three (3) minutes.
It was agreed that further consideration be adjourned until a future meeting of the committee.
The committee considered the matter of rules for joint committees.
Mr. Jamie Robertson, Library of Parliament Researcher, made a statement and answered questions from Background Notes previously circulated to senators on rules for joint committees.
After debate,
It was agreed that the Clerk and staff, under the direction of the Chair and Deputy Chair, open discussions with their counterparts in the House of Commons to assess the interest of establishing rules for joint committees.
It was agreed that further consideration be adjourned until a future meeting of the committee.
At 1:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
