The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, at 3:35 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cohen, Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, P.C., Ferretti Barth, Kirby, LeBreton, Morin and Robertson (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Keon and Pépin (2).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Howard Chodos, from the Committees and Private Legislation Directorate: Josée Thérien, Legislative Clerk.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 1, 2001, the committee began its consideration of the special study on the state of the health care system in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the committee, Issue No.2.)

From Health Canada:

Barbara Ouellet, Director of Home Care and Pharmaceuticals, Health Care Directorate, Policy and Consultation Branch.

The Chair made a statement.

Dr. Coambs made a statement. Dr. Poston made a statement. Dr. Korman made a statement. Ms Ouellet made a statement.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 5:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
