The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in room 705, Victoria Building at 6:15 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Day, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Oliver, Ringuette and Wiebe (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 31, 2002, the committee began to consider the impact of climate change on Canada's agriculture, forests and rural communities and the potential adaptation options focusing on primary production, practices, technologies, ecosystems and other related areas. (For a complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Mr. Roger Cox, Research Scientist, Canadian Forest Service (Forest Health).

Mr. Brian Stocks, Senior Research Scientist, Forest Fire and Global Change;

From the University of Montreal:

Mr. Christopher Bryant, Professor and Chair, IGU Commission on the Sustainable Development of Rural Systems.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Roger Cox made a presentation.

Brian Stocks made a presentation.

Roger Cox and Brian Stocks answered questions.

At 7:45 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:50 p.m., the sitting was resumed.

Christopher Bryant made a presentation and answered questions.

At 8:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
