The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 5:43 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Oliver, Tkachuk and Wiebe (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marc Leblanc and Jean-Denis Fréchette.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 11, 2003, the committee continued to consider issues related to the development and domestic and international marketing of value-added agricultural, agri-food and forest products. (For a complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 18.)

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Agri-food Trade Alliance:

Ted Menzies, President;

Patty Townsend, Executive Director.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Menzies made a presentation.

Mr. Menzies and Ms. Townsend answered questions.

At 7:35 p.m., Senator Fairbairn assumed the Chair.

At 7:37 p.m., Senator Oliver resumed the Chair.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 7:38 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 8:30 a.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Day, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, LaPierre, Oliver, Tkachuk and Wiebe (9).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marc Leblanc; Frédéric Forge and Jean- Denis Fréchette.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, the committee began to hear from the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and his officials in order to receive a briefing on incidences of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Canada.

WITNESSES:

From Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Andrew Marsland, Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch;

Gilles Lavoie, Senior Director General, Operations, Market and Industry Services Branch.

From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency:

Brian Evans, Chief Veterinary officer for Canada.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Marsland and Mr. Evans made a presentation.

Mr. Marsland, Mr. Evans and Mr. Lavoie answered questions.

At 9:43 a.m., Senator Fairbairn assumed the Chair.

At 9:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
