OTTAWA, Wednesday, June 18, 2003

The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence, to which was referred Bill C-411, to establish Merchant Navy Veterans Day, met this day at 12:00 p.m. to give consideration to the bill.

Senator J. Michael Forrestall (Deputy Chairman) in the Chair.

[English]

The Deputy Chairman: Senators, we have an order of reference from the appropriate authority that the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs be authorized to examine and consider clause-by-clause and report for the committee on Bill C-411, to establish Merchant Navy Veterans Day, which was referred to committee by the Senate on Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

Senator Day: I so move.

The Deputy Chairman: Is it adopted?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The committee suspended.

The committee resumed.

The Deputy Chairman: Honourable senators, I call this meeting to order.

Senator Meighen: Honourable senators, I have the honour to report that the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs has examined clause by clause Bill C-411, to establish Merchant Navy Veterans Day, and recommends that the committee report the bill to the Senate without amendment. I move that the committee concur in the subcommittee's recommendation.

The Deputy Chairman: Is that agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

Senator Banks: When the bill is reported in the chamber, is it possible to ask that it be read the third time forthwith?

Senator Day: The leadership would have to agree.

The Deputy Chairman: Senator Day and I have had a brief discussion about that suggestion. I will speak with the opposition side and he will speak with the government side. If that is all right, when I present the bill later today, I will ask for leave to consider it later this day. Is that agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Deputy Chairman: Given your approval to report the bill without delay, the committee stands adjourned.

The committee adjourned.
