The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9:38 a.m., in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joan Fraser, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Corbin, Forrestall, Fraser, and Graham, P.C. (5).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Massicotte (1).

In attendance: Terrence Thomas, Research Officer, Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, the committee continued its examination of the current state of Canadian media industries. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 6, dated March 20, 2003.)

WITNESSES:

From Rogers Communications Inc.:

Philip B. Lind, Vice-Chairman;

Ken Engelhart, Vice-President, Regulatory Law;

Alain Strati, Director, Regulatory Affairs.

From Rogers Media Inc.:

Anthony P. Viner, President.

From Rogers Publishing Limited:

Brian Segal, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Lind made a presentation and, with Messrs. Viner, Segal, Engelhart, and Strati, answered questions.

At 11:16 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

WITNESSES:

Arthur Lewis, Director General;

Sheila Petzold, Chair of the Coordinating Committee;

Doug Willard, Past President of the Canadian Teachers' Federation.

Mr. Lewis made a presentation and, with Ms. Petzold and Mr. Willard, answered questions.

At 12:38 p.m. the committee proceeded in camera, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), to consider its agenda.

At 12:51 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
