The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, at 8:00 a.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Downe, Fairbairn, P.C., Gill, Gustafson, Hubley, Mahovlich, Oliver and Sparrow (8).
In attendance: Frédéric Forge, Marc Leblanc and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 the committee began its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 19, 2004 for full text of the Order of Reference.)
TOPIC: The BSE Strategy: Increasing the Ruminant Slaughter Capacity in Canada.

At 8:00 a.m., Mr. Lavoie and Ms. Mountjoy made statements and together with the other witnesses answered questions.
At 9:20 a.m., Mr. Eby and Ms. Dunford made statements and together with the other witnesses answered questions.
At 10:15 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.
At 10:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
