The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, at 8:05 a.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Catherine S. Callbeck, Acting Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Hubley, Kelleher, P.C., Mercer and Oliver (5).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Marc Leblanc.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 19, 2004, for full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Food Inspection Agency:

Peter Brackenridge, Acting Executive Vice-President, Office of the President;

Krista Mountjoy, Acting Vice-President, Operations;

Cameron Prince, Executive Director, Animal Products Directorate;

Dr. Gary Little, Veterinary Program Officer, Animal Products Directorate.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Andrew Larsland, Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services;

Gilles Lavoie, Senior Director General, Team Leader, Food Safety and Quality.

Mr. Brackenridge made a statement and together with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 9:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gill, Gustafson, Kelleher, Mercer, Oliver and Tkachuk (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Marc Leblanc.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 19, 2004, for complete text of Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Dr. Bruce A. Archibald, Assistant Deputy Minister, Research Branch;

Dr. Yvon Martel, Chief Scientist, International.

Dr. Archibald made a statement and together with the other witness, answered questions.

At 7:30 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) the committee continued in camera to discuss the future agenda of the committee.

At 7:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
